Of Common-Wealth
Thomas Hobbes Leviathan(1651)
Part II
Chapter XIX
Of the severall kinds of common wealth by institution, and succession to soveraigne power.
For seeing every man by nature seeketh his own benefit, and promotion; to put an infant into the power of those, that can promote themselves by his destruction, or dammage, is not tuition, but trechery.
- for those of you, who have a hard time reading 17th century English, I'll translate it for you.
it's simply stateing that a person does things for him/herself because it's a part of their nature. So to put a baby in charge, like in a monarchy and name him/her ruler is not a service to the people, but is a betrayal to all the people in that nation because their lives are in the infant's hands.
and if you think about it in that sense, a corporation is like a monarchy, which is a frightening realization.
